The The Institute for Nutrition and Psychology at the Georg-August-University Göttingen Medical Center(IfE) is a research and teaching institute at the Georg-August University of Göttingen. It was founded in 2007 as the successor to the Nutrition and Psychology Research Unit, which was headed by Prof. Dr. Volker Pudel, at Göttingen University Medical Centre. The main task of the institute is interdisciplinary research on human eating behaviour between nutrition science, psychology, education and medicine. In particular, the determinants of human eating decisions are investigated.
The question "Why do people eat differently than they should?" is at the heart of the research. If the barriers to changing eating and exercise behaviour are uncovered, behavioural and relationship strategies can be effectively developed to reduce these obstacles. Further research projects deal with the question of how many people in Germany are affected by addictive eating behaviour (food addiction), whether even looking at food leads to the release of appetite-stimulating hormones (ghrelin) in the stomach and small intestine, and what therapeutic success modern online weight management programmes achieve.
